FURIOUS STORM
SWEEPS SOUTHERN ITALY. MUCH HAVOC CAUSED. H KAYY LOS'S OF LTFE FEARED. ay cauee—phess association—copyuiuiiT. ROME, Now 20. A tremendous storm of wind and rain swept southern Italy, wrecking houses. Harbours and swollen rivers burst their banks, hooding the countryside, destroying crops, drowning cattle, and demolishing railways. A tidal wave submerged the coast between Naples and Sicily, destroying shipping. 'the inhabitants were surprised by the fury of the storm, and many were killed and injured by flying debris. Cantanzaro reports very severe damage. The crops have been totally destroyed. The sea wall was smashed at Naples and ships broke their moorings, resulting in many collisions. The liner President Garfield was unable to enter the harbour. There were numerous fires in the city and the whole district is in darkness owing to the destruction of the electric power cables. The full casualties and extent oi the damage are not yet known. The sea invaded the land at Calabria for a hundred yards, it aiso destroyed many villages and olive and orange plantations. The town of Bagrard was wiped out. Torrential rains flooded thousands of acres. Several persons were drowned. GREECE ALSO SUFFERS. ATHENS, Nov. 30. A violent storm is raging on the Greek coast. Several steamers have been lost. Inland communications are interrupted.
