N.Z. FRIESIAN SOCIETY.

MEETING OF COUNCIL. At a meeting held in Christchurch' . of the Friesian Association last week J South Taranaki was represented by 0* Messrs H. E. Johnson -(Hawera) and.) H. J. Marchant (Cardiff). Amongst the business transacted) were many resolutions of interest to the breeders. It was resolved to approve of the proposal to request the New South Wales Agricultural Association to include an inter-State Friesian group competition in the Sydney Royal Show schedule for Easter, 1926; each group to consist of two males and five females. It was reported that a New Zealand team would be sent, and that entries would probably come from New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, and South Australia. Mr W. J. Hodgson, Te Awamutu, wrote re certificates of production issued by herd testing associations.; —It was resolved to bring before th© Director of the Dairy Division the desirability of having- the title “Certificates of Record” registered and reserved exclusively for the use of purebred pedigree dairy cattle. " Among new members elected were.the following:—Messrs J. Hewitt (Stratford). C. O. Lyon (Inglewood), Mrs M. E. Weston (Uruti), and Mrs A. A. Wooldridge (Okato). Calf marking.—Mr John I. Royds, Christchurch, wrote, stating that for identification of calves, particularly in; large herds, he had found the card system very useful. Each card had an outline of a calf on it, and on this diagram the markings of the calf could be pencilled in. On, the reverse side the date of birth, sex, sire and* dam were written. Thi s method was merely preliminary to the photographic record of each animal. Mr E. C.- Banks stated that he had found the metal numbered . ear-tag very convenient and absolutely reliable. Immediately a calf was born a numbered metal tag was affixed to the top part of fhe ear of the calf, and a corresponding tag t-o the ear of the dam.

New branches were reported as having, been formed at Rodney (Auckland) and in the Wairarapa.
