AIRMAN’S DARING FEAT.
VERTICAL DESCENT TEST. CRASH WITHOUT DISASTER. LONDON, Nov. 1. Squadron-Leader Haig, while descending in the Cierva helicopter, crashed from within 20ft of the ground. . It is explained that the mishap occurred while an unprecedented test was being carried out in the shape of an absolute vertical descent from a height of 150 ft.
It wa s feared that two struts which had ,not been built to withtsand such a test won'd collapse, hut it was decided to take the risk. The helicopter descended perfectly, and though the struts broke, there was no other damage.
