(By Telegraph—Special to Star.) WELLINGTON, Nov. 16. William Hayden, who died at Terrace Gaol, under mysterious circumstances, was a big man of powerful build, and had been morose 6ince entering prison last July. He became completely mad on Friday night, tearing the prison stool from its fastenings by a superhuman effort. He announced he was going to die, and the doctors decided for his own safety that _ he must he secured and sent to Porirua Mental Hospital. Placing him in a strait-jacket was difficult, for the man fought like a tiger. It was only with extreme difficulty that his struggles were overcome. When placed in the jacket he began to kick violently, so it was decided to secure his legs with a strap. Even when this was done the prisoner was by no means beaten, and to make absolutely sure that he could not possibly harm himself, handcuffs were brought and fastened on his wrists. Then a mattress was placed on the floor of the cell, and Hayden was forced on to his hack, lying absolutely powerless. POLICE INVESTIGATING. WELLINGTON, Nov. 16. The police are investigating the Terrace Gaol mystery. A post mortem examination took place this afternoon. The inquest will probably he held tomorrow.
