HAWERA SCHOOL.

APPLICATION FOR EXTENSIONS. THE DEPARTMENT’S REPLY. At yesterday’s meeting of the Tara* nnki Education Board at New Ply mouth a letter dated October 22 was received from the Education Depart* ment in reply to the board’s applica* tion for a grant of £6446 to cover thq cost of a new infants” school at Hawera. The letter stated that the matter of erecting -a new infant department must stand over until it was ascertained what funds were available for such works during the present financial year. When the matter was further considered thq question of a new school on the Turu* turn site should bo taken into account. Apparently this would take 100 or morq pupils from the,Hawera School. In reference to further buildings, thej letter explained that the, replacement of the boys’ out offices -was the board’s liability. It was mentioned that four years ago the department provided £440. for the erection of out offices.

In connection with the proposal tq erect an infant school, the letter con* tinued, it would appear that the board proposed to scrap these, and asked tho department for a further grant of £390 for offices in lieu thereof. From this it would appear that the board proposed to build the infant department at the far end of the school site, though when the Minister had visited Hawera on September 14, 1923, the school commit* tee had objected to this location as it was the bleakest part of the site. Referring to the objection mentioned, Mr. A. Lees explained that the sitd spoken of at the timfe of tho Minister’s visit was a reserve set aside in a corner of the school property and was somq distance from the main building. It would be preferable to have the infans school closer to the main school, but tho matter of the location did not present serious difficulty. - Also the possibility of the establishment of a school at Turuturu need not prejudice tho adoption of the work, as it was essential that in the present school better provision should bp made for the infant classes. Mr. Lees and the chairman (Mr. S. G. Smith) were appointed by the board to make further representations to the de* partment.
