MATAPU.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) CARNIVAL DANCE. The last dance to be held on behalf of the country candidate took place in the Matapu Hall last Friday evening, and despite counter attractions there was a large attendance. The Matapu committee seemed almost pleased that the carnival was drawing to a close, for this i,s the wrong time of the year for country folk to* interest themselves in such matters. Rut the committee has worked very hard ior Miss Beech and, although they were unable to win, it was gratifying for the country people to know that they had raised over £IOO for the Hawera bands, A short concert programme was presented, which was greatly appreciated. Fancy dances were given by Misses G. Lay. G. Goodwin and the Peddar sisters. Miss Mabel Guy rendered a piano' solo, “Napoleon’s Last Charge,” and she also contributed a song. Miss Norma Thomas gave a nice little recitation and she .sang a song, “My Own Queen,” composed by Mi :ss M. Guy and Mr. R. West. The accompanists for the fancy dances were Miss R... Meßeth and .Messrs Newberry and Sharpe, and for the songs, Mrs. Seed and Miss Guy. Messrs E. Burrows and O. Bootten were capable M’s.C., while Sharpe’s orchestra supplied the music for the dance. The sealed envelope on the Country doll will be opened on Tuesday night, when ai short concert programme will he presented.
