NOTES AND COMMENTS. Nominations for all events, except 20tli Feilding Stakes, for the. Feilding Jockey Club’s. Spring meeting, to be held on November 28 and 30, close on Tuesday, November 3. Musketoon is working well, and even with 9.5' is certain to prove hard to beat in the Mitchelson Cup next Saturday. Despite a load of 9.2, the connections of Te Kara are very confident about the gelding’s ability to win the New Zealand • Cup next Saturday. In. Count Cavour (8.8) The Banker (8.0) and Tregham (7.11), four-year-olds hold a strong part in the New Zealand Cup, and one of the trio named may prove the winner. After his good showing at the Avondale meeting, it was thought by many that Joy King was unbeatable at Trentham on Saturday, but fourth was the closest lie got- This was not the true form of Joy King. From the easy manner in which he won the Shorts Handicap at Trentliam last Saturday, carrying 7.12 (including 41bs overweight), it would appear that Mimetic (7.9) must be very hard to beat in the Stewards’ Handicap at Riccarton.
The Poverty Bay Turf Club concludes its spring} meeting to-day, after which there will be rio racing until next Saturday. On that day both the Canterbury'Jockey Club and Auckland Racing Club open their spring fixtures. The Melbourne Cup will be decided on Tuesday next. In the list of final acceptors'Mr. Lowry’s pair, Nigger Minstrel and Phoenix Park, were included, but it is curtain that the pair were left in by oversight, as Nigger Minstrel has gone wrong and Phoenix Park is going to Riccarton, The Waikato Racing Club is now provided with a fine Steeplechase course. The fences are very wide, in some cases extending right across the fine course. The jumps arc of various kinds, but are not too formidable. The well known rider, Alan McDonald, describes them as ideal.
Although. Ripon Abbey failed to gain a place at the Waikato Hunt Club meeting, he ran a fine race, and this gelding may prove very hard to beat in the Great Northern Guineas on Saturday next. R. Hannan would not take 1000 guineas for Ripon Abbey. The stock of Bisogne did really well at the meetings held recently, for besides winning a.number of “spript” races, this sire was represented by a winner over hurdles in Banjuke, and Vaward's form over 1 j miles in the Waverley Cup would suggest that Bisogne will get stayers if suitable consorts are forthcoming. Many good judges consider that Windbag (0.2) is certain to beat Manfred (7.8) in the coming Melbourne Cup, but good horse as Windbag undoubtedly is, it may be found that 22 lbs arc too much to give a good threeycarjold like Manfred and beat him. Windbag will be a runner in the Mel-
bourne Stakes to-day. This event is run under weight for age ,conditions. The successes of the New Zealand Cup candidates Ravenna (at Gore) and Count Cavour (Rangiora) still, further obsyures the probable winner of the big southern handicap. It is many years since such a number of the acceptors had such excellent credentials in the form of recent successes. Possibly the modifying of the rehandicapping condition is responsible for such good public ‘ ‘ trials. ’ ’
The Victorian Racing Club’s Derby will be decided to-day. . On form an. performances the event should be at the mercy of Manfred, a son of Woorak, who has proved himself a high class three-year-old. Manfred is also engaged in the Melbourne Cup, to be decided on Tuesday, and if he wins that important handicap the “ring” will lose heavily, as he was backed to win £50,000 by his owner, coupled with Whittier, for the Caulfield Cup, which event he duly won. LOCAL DOINGS. Trainers Pine and J. Brown . will leave Hawera on Monday by rail for the Auckland meeting, which takes place on Saturday and Monday, November 7 and 9.
Vaward and the two-year-old colt Seatown will comprise W. Pine’s 'team. Vaward is a Mitchelson Cup candidate, and his trainer is very sanguine about his chance, as the horse has done a good preparation and is very well at the present time. . The two-vear-old is a half-brother to Sea Star, and is said to be a _ very smart galloper. He is engaged in the Welcome Stakes. Helen will be in the care of J. Brown. This filly is also engaged in the Welcome Stakes, she being one of Trainer- Cox’s team. She ran second in the Wellesley Stakes last Saturday at Trentham.
Star Area, trained by J. Brown, will make his appearance in the Northern Guineas: he will be ridden in this race by R. J. Flowers, who will probably have the mount on Helen in the Welcome Stakes.
J. Fryer will be leaving with Price on Tuesday by boat. He is engaged in the Steeples, second day. Gold Rangi has made an appearance on the tracks after a spell, and will be prepared for future events by A. J. Bryant.
