FREIGHT ON METAL.
DEPUTATION TO PRIME MINISTER V
Members of the Patea County Council and Waveriey Town Board waited on the Prime Minister and the commercial agent of the railways (Mr AVellsted) while in Hawera to see if a reduction could be .made in the cost of freight on metal, supplies. The deputation consisted of Messrs Belton and. Watkins and the county engineer (Mr King) from. Patea, and Messrs Dallison. and Palmer from Waveriey. They put their case fully, showing that the present position was imposible, and they were practically debarred from obtaining necessary and essential supplies of metal to continue their roading operations. They stressed the fact that metal from near AVanganui cost now more than double what -it ■ did a few years ago, and that thev had offered to finance a. quarry of their own, but the conditions were again impossible. The Prime Minister and the commercial agent heard the case, and promised that they would go fully into the matter and see whether it was possible to grant relief. V »■
