SUNDAY EVENING CONCERTS.
MAYOR SPEAKS STRONGLY.
AGAINST COUNCIL'S ACTION;
“I do not understand why the community takes this sort of thing lying down,'’ said the Mayor, (Mr.: E. A. P'acey) concerning the action of ■ the Hawera Borough Council in refusing to allow a Wanganui band to give a Sunday evening •.concert in Hawera; The Mayor made these remarks at the opening of the Bands’ Carnival Bazaar yesterday afternoon. At the outset, Mr. Pacey said he had been unavoidably .absent from the last meeting of the council, but had he been present he would certainly have used his casting vote in favour of permittirfg the concert. It was apparent that the council bad lost sight of the fact that, although the band was an outside one, the Hawera band would have received a considerable portion of the proceeds. .... /—,~ He said he knew of no objection to the Sunday evening concerts, and' in his opinion they were not detrimental to the public. Some of the church services often approached very close to concert lines in endeavouring' to: attract large congregations. He failed to see that the attendance of the public at ■ a concert after the church services ;would greatly affect’ the church collection, but he would not like To suggest that he considered that this was the churches’ primary consideration.’ •; Although a believer in strict observance of the Sabbath, he did not think the council had any right to interfere with the public doing as it pleased. 1 In conclusion, be said be could not unde-stand the public standing such treatment, and he was glad to see that pome citizens had taken the matter into the Press in ,an’endeavour to secure fair play.
