HAWERA CLUB. OPENING OF SEASON. In common with other sports; tennis and croquet, the season for which at the Hawera Club was opened officially on Saturday afternoon, experienced most unpleasant and unfavourable weather. So much was this the case that although the season was duly set on its way, it was impossible to play any games. At half-past two there was a fair gathering of players and others interested at the Hawera courts, when, in a happy speech, Mr. U. Collins, president of the club, declared the season open for play. The president said that the game had been played a considerable number of years at Haw-era, and many visiting players had made appreciative references about the club. He wished both departments, tennis and croquet, all success in the coming season, and said he was sure all would work together for the success of the club, so that it would benefit largely from a financial point of view. He specially commended the ladies for the good work they had done.
To mark the formal opening, Mrs. Collins, wife of the president, drove a ball through one of the hoops. She and Mrs. Bilton, vice-president, were then presented with bouquets of flowers by the ladies. A dainty afternoon tea was served in the pavilion by the tea committee and was much appreciated by all.
It will be of interest to all members to know that the lawns are in good order, thanks to the work, of the caretaker, and that players look forward to a successful season.
