COMPETITIONS COMMENCED. NO PLAY IN SOUTH TARANAKI. SMALL SCORING IN NORTH. Biid luck lias so far dogged the cricketers here and just nt two o’clock on Saturday, the time set down for opening the game, the rain, which had held oft - during the morning, set in hard and made play impossible. Manaia came in to play Excelsior, and after waiting an hour the general verdict was that the game would have to be abandoned, although at that time the weather looked like moderating. At Okaiawa, Midlands were set down to play, and a start was made, the local men going in to bat. After half an hour, however, the play was. abandoned, Okaiawa' having 39 on the board for no wickets. IN NORTH TARANAKI. Small scores were the order of the day in the' North, only three players reaching twenty. Several most effective bowling* averages were secured. Bottrill, for Old Boys, took seven wickets for l(i and Eggleton three for 14; for Western Park, Quickfall secured six for 40; for New Plymouth Clarke got four for 2.1 and Norgate three for 7; and for High School Strombom five for 23. Scores were as follow: — Old Boys 32 v. Western Park 35, and 43 for six wickets. New Plymouth 133 v. High School 49, and 13 for two wickets. Playing for Western Park, Grayson ran up 2(3, while for Old Boys Palmer made 10, Papps 11. Montcath 10 (not out). For High School Snallard and Strombom got IS each, and for New Plymouth the best were Nasmith 33, Aiteheson 23, Nicoll 16, Sheppard 17, Akers 10. • GAMES IN AUSTRALIA.

It is definitely stated that W. K. Patrick, who' was selected to captain the New Zealand touring team, will not travel to Australia with the team, as he is unable to make the necessary arrangements. Though the weather cleared on Saturday it was impossible to open the cricket season with play, as the grounds were sodden with rain.
