In the first heat Hamilton (Nbw Zealand) beat Melbourne by a length* and a half, Banks. (Victoria) being thirds Hamilton started well and soon had a few feet lead. Although the stroke (Sandos) lost his ' slide ' immediately after the start * Hamilton maintained' their lead throughout,, winning easily. Time, smin 33sec." In the semi-fihal Hamilton drew the north side. West Australia got'away first, leading by six feet at * the; quaij-, ter-mile. (Hamilton : sprinted and caught West Australia, gaining''a two-feet lead at the three-quarter distance: Both crews finished strongly, West Australia winning in a thrilling; finish by' twq feet. The spectators gave a great ova l tion to the crews, some thinking it was* a dead heat.'.
