TO END STRIKE

UNIONS TO TAKE ACTION.

LATEST AUSTRALIAN MOVE. WITHDRAWAL OF SUPPORT. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. Received Oct. 23, 11.5 a.m. MELBOURNE, Oct. 23. Although there has been a good response to the call for volunteer labourto man the ships, no one has been signed on, the applicants names being noted for future reference. There is now a pronounced view in union circles that steps should be taken to terminate the strike, and it is likely that diiring the next week union officials and leaders of the Labour Party will insist on the seamen returning to the ships independently of the terms which will be offered by the owners. The indications are that the unions will withdraw financial support from the strikers, in which event an early collapse of the strike will be inevitable.

AN ATTACK BY COMMUNISTS. STATHMEfNT BY SHIPPING _ ; ■ . > MANAGER.. ''Received Oct. 23, 12.25 a.m. SYDNEY, Oct. 23. The London office of a Sydney firm has forwarded a statement made by Mr Laws, General Manager of the Shipping Federation, in which he says that it is clear that the whole attack by the seamen -was of Communist origin. FVom the time the reduction of wages J. was arranged until early in the month ,'later, no protesting voice was raised 1 anywhere. Then Communist meetings were commenced to he held in London. None of the speakers were seamen and very few seamen were in the audience. The attack succeeded to the extent of frightening men of certain ships into not signing t'he articles and the trouble then extended. The nature of the pressure brought to hear on the men was shown by the fact that in some instances the men who refused to sign on at one port took a train to another port and signed on there. Leadens of the movement in Australia and England are known Commuiets.

CALL FOB FREE LABOUR. SATISFACTORY AT SYDNEY. MELBOURNE, Oct. 22. Owing to the strike the steamer Diogenes, from England, which was to have called at Melbourne, will go direct to Sydney. . The agents of the British shipping companies state that they have received a satisfactory response to their invitation for a limited number of men to man ships leaving for ports outside Australia. h . _ The police were on duty outside the shipping office, which the strikers picketed, but no attempts were made to interfere with men applying for Jobs. TROUBLE ON THE ORSOVA. FREMANTLE, Oct. 22. An attempt to unload portion of the refrigerated cargo from the steamer Orsova was prevented by lumpers refusing to work the vessel, th© having declared the derricks and cargo black. ’ '

{ SEAMEN IN CONFERENCE. “BLACK’’ SHIPS NOT TO BE FUELED. SYDNEY, Oct. 22. The Seamen’s Union met further to consider the strike position. The meeting was protracted, and at times the proceedings were very turbulent and angry. It is understood the most important decision reached was one forbidding tbe manning or working of colliers listed to, coal overseas ships involved in the dispute. This embargo is also t’o apply to the supply of coal or oil fuel to. the Ball’s Head supply depot. The latter part of the decision will affect the oil-burning steamers of all lines, incuuding the Union Company. AFTER THE DEFEAT. LEADERS FALL OUT. _ SYDNEIY, Oct. 22. Another version of the Seamen’s Union meeting, which was held in camera, indicates that it chiefly resolved into a squabble between Walsh and Johnson, the latter attacking Walsh for advising the men to submit to arbitration, that the meeting canned a resolution of confidence in Wa’sh, and that the question of continuing to support the British seamen was postponed till to-morrow. Nc resolution on that point was carried. _ / i SENT TO GAOL AGAIN. DISOBEDIENT SEAMEN. Received Oct. 23, 11.8 a.m. BRISBANE, Oct. 23. A further hatch of British seamen, the majority of whom have already served terms of imprisonment., was sentenced to a further fourteen days’ imprisonment for continued wilful -disobedience. FREE LABOUR ON HORORATA. (BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) DUNEDIN, Oct. 22. Sufficient men were secured to-day to complete the crew of the Hororata, and the vessel left Port Chalmers at 3 p.m. for Bluff. A few members of the original crew were on hoard, but the majority were non-unionists. It is anticipated there will be no difficulty in securing sufficient men to take the Leitrim to sea. The vessel will finish her local loading at Port Chalmers to-morrow, and is scheduled to sail on Saturday morning for Bluff. TRIMMER BEFORE THE COURT. CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 22. At Lyttelton to-day Richard Phinns. a trimmer, was charged with wilful disobedience of lawful commands. Accused, who is a member of the crew of the Raranga, pleaded not guilty. Accused was convicted and ordered to pay costs, being discharged on the understanding that he returned to his ship and obeyed the lawful commands of the master..
