THE ATHENIC’S CREW.

STOKERS REFUSE DUTY

FREE LABOUR ENGAGED.

(by telegraph.-—press association.) AUCKLAND, Oct. 16.

The original crew of the Athenic, except seven, have agreed to take the .vessel to Wellington conditionally that no volunteer labour .is employed and the seven men sent overland join the vessel at Wellington. The owners agreed, and the seamen joinetd the vessel in the stream. When the Athenio was ready to sail the stokehold hands refused duty. The company immediately had the crew and their baggage returned ashore. The Athenic will be niow manned enby "free labour and is expected to depart to-night. So far there has been no interruption on the work of discharge on the Otaki 'or Port Nicholson discharge, but the intentions of the crew are not known.

It is understood the Australian Seamen’s Union will pay the men the Australian rates of pay out of its own funds, pending a settlement of the dispute. The owners, so far, have not replied to the offer. ANOTHER. SHIP SAILS. Received Oct. 16, 11.30 a.m. ADELAIDE, Oct. 16. The steamer Automedon has sailed for Europe, the crew remaining loyal.

REMOVAL OF ASHES. PERTH, October 16. The Seamen’s Union prevented wharf labourers from removing ashes from oversea vessels. COALING THE SUEVIC. Received Oct. 16. 11.30 a.m. SYDNEY, Oct. 16. Coaling operations have commenced at Newcastle on the White Star liner Suevic. No trouble is anticipated in getting the vessel away ,on scheduled time. RARANGA’S MEN RETURN TO ’ WORK. DUNEDIN, Oct. 16. The Raranga’s men have been released from gaol and have returned to work.
