CONSTRUCTING A PEA HARVESTING RAKE.

1 . .• ■ .. !'iif!rr®ii?*rs£*v'‘'" . i Three years ago we received from a subscriber a request to be furnished with particulars which would enable him to construct a rake suitable for harvesting field peas.. The. request was complied with, and among other illustrations was published that now reproduced above at the request of “Constant Reader”. For information and the sketch we are indebted to Mr. George S. Gordon, Science Field Officer at the Central Research Station In the drawings A represents grooves for iron straps bolted to' the pulling frame; 'B, grooves for iron straps bolted’ to the handles, and in which tlie rake revolves; C, irons bolted to the handles, and which clutch with others on the 4x4 main timber when the handles are raised to tip the load; D (Side view), bolts at end of 4 x 4 timber to prevent splitting; E, when

Speeifications and Methods Described. The handles are raised the iron rod pushes back the swinging support, the clutches.grip the front, the tines grip the ground, and the horse pull - the rake over; F, long thread with two nuts. The whole of the timber (says Mr. Gordon) should be straight grained, good quality hardwood. The implement is drawn by one horse, with the traces attached direct to the hooks shown, and we find it very useful and satisfactory. When in use the horse walks close to the edge ot the crop, and when the rake is loaded the handles are raised and the rake deposits the load by turning over. It at once commences to pick up on the oilier side. The ralce pulls the peas; no cutting is required; but see that in turning, a small area o unpulled peas is left under each heap. . i These are pulled by the rake on the

return trip by dragging the heap: easily manipplated -, f _ worltln p ing section 'attached ‘to'the ' so that the latter will swing clear of fines' when the. handles . are raised—»nd th. adjustment of the clutehes to order that, the handles will be at comfortable height, for the operator.
