SPECTACULAR FEATS.
HOW SANDOW GAINED PROMINENCE.
BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRHIGT, LONDON, Oct. 14. The death is announced of Mr Eugen Sandow, the well-known physical culture expert. Sandow died suddenly, breaking a blood vessel in the brain, which in turn was the result of shock and overstrain a few years ago when, following a motor accident, he lifted a car out of a ditch single-handed. Sandow first gained prominence in London in 1893, when his strong man turns were presented in an entirely new manner. Young and good-looking, he soon became the Lodon rage. Strong men challenging his feat came and went, but Sandow remained the one pre-eminent., A sensational effort was when Sandow lifted a horse at arms length above his head and marched about with it to musical accompaniment. Another spectacular feat was lifting and supporting on his chest a grand piano with an orchestra of eight members on top. So great was the reputation of Sandow’s physical strength that on one occasion'when burglars broke in and recognised him sleeping they decamped, leaving the booty. , Sandow left the stage 27 years ago after appearing all over the w r orld. He established a physical culture business in 1911, and was appointed professor of scientific physical culture to the King.
