U.S.A. OIL SUPPLIES.

AN ALARMING SITUATION. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. NEW YORK, Oct. 13. A telegram from Atlantic City says a truly alarming situation exists regarding the United States’ supply of natural petroleum oil, according to Mr Henry Doherty, president of the Doherty Oil Company, New York. Addressing a convention of the American Gas Association, Mr Doherty controverted the recent report of the American Petroleum Institute, stating that the nation’s oil supply was adequate. He declared that a careful analysis of the report did not convince that if there were another war, even within three years, the United States would be certain to have a proper supply available. The Petroleum Institute’s committee fell back on the 1 assurance of the supply of oil from shale oil and coal beds; yet they were compelled to admit in the same report that if all the coal mined in 19.24 were l used to make oil, it would have produced barely more than 3 per cent, of the motor fuel required.
