PATEA COUNTY.

OLD-TIME METAL SUPPLIES.

AND A NEW SCHEME

One of the oldest sources of metal supply in. the district, used many years ago> by the Patea County Council, is the Manutahi Beach. There, it is said, are still large supplies of good metal, but the expense of getting it prohibits its use. Years ago the metal was given a thorough trial. The experience proved that it could npt economically be used, .and this fact is much to he regretted, in view of the extraordinary difficulty in procuring supplies at the present time. With a view to exploring possible Sources, a committee of the council will probably go down to. Porewa, near Marton, a half-mile from a railway station, where large supplies of good boulders up to nine inches are available. The engineer reported that it might be necessary to subsidise the contractor who is working the quarries. If that- were done and the county secured an interest in the works, it would have first claim on metal, and the engineer reported that there would be a big demand for any surplus supplies. It could be crushed and go straight into the trucks.
