RAWHITIROA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) The hearts of the housewives are gladdened and the labours of the dairy farmer are lightened by the timely arrival of hydro-electric power in this district. Its coming was fittingly celebrated in the hall on Wednesday last by a. most successful ball. The* Hall Committee spared no effort to inake the evening a joyful and memorable one, and was rewarded by the attendance of a record crowd. Boulton’s Orchestra provided much appreciated music, and decorative streamers added to the gaiety of the scene. A free lorry and cars from other places brought welcome visitors to swell the throng of dancers. An excellent supper was provided and, as a proof of everyone’s enjoyment, dancing was kept up till a later hour than usual. The coming of the light marks an important, epoch. Last year our hall was painted and renovated, and it is said that other improvements in the wav of new ante-rooms are to follow in due course. There has not been much done in the way of cultivation so far this season. Alf growth in gardens is very slow. Even the clematis in the bush is weeks later than its usual time in flowering. The school inspector has just paid his annual visit and, though not entirely dreaded as in days of yore, his coming is still regarded by the, pupils with mixed feelings, generally varying with the preparedness of the child. Our school roll has dwindled seriously this year, owing to incomers this season having fewer children than the outgoers. The tennis club has held its annual meeting, and fixed on Labour Day as opening day this year. Having a fair credit balance, the club sent a deputation' to the school committee to confer with it as to the best methods of improving the surroundings of the tennis court. Arrangements were made for a combined working bee. New wire netting will be erected, more space given round the court, and other general improvments made, which will add to the convenience and appearance both of the court and the school ground's.
