TRIBUTE TO MR. COATES. PAID BY NATIONALIST. (by TELEGKAI’H. I'B.ESS ASSOCIATION.) DUNEDIN, Oet. 12. , Janies Horn, the Nationalist candidate for Wakatipu, speaking at Ophir, referred to Mr. Coates as one of the ablest and most popular men on the Reform side. He had not got the support from liis Cabinet colleagues that he was entitled to. Mr. Coates entered the House as a Liberal, and the speaker believed him to be a true Liberal yet. Nationalists would be quite prepared to negotiate for the formation of a National Party, accepting Mr. Coates as leader. In regard, to finance, he said that during twelve months the gross indebtedness of the country increased by £12,000,000. It was about time the expenditure wiis reduced. He advocated the subdivision of large runs, so that a greater proportion could be transformed into wheat-growing country. The South Island) was not getting a fair share of Government grants, and the estimates showed that the sum of £1,420,000 was granted to the North as against £120,000 to the South Island. As to the shipping strike, lie thought the Government should- have given the men the extra 30s asked, when they could have gone Home and settled the dispute. A vote of thanks and confidence was carried.
MR DICKIE AT AVHAKAAIARA
Mr H. G., Dickie, the Reform candidate for Patea, • addressed a wellattended meeting of the electors at Whakamara on Saturday evening on the same lines as at- Waverley, and received a very attentive hearing. After several questions had- been asked Mr Dobson moved that a hearty vote of thanks be accorded Mr Dickie for his able and interesting address, and that the meeting express its confidence in Mr Coates and the Reform Government. This was seconded 1 by Mr Langley and carried unanimously. After the meeting a strong committee was set up, with Mr Christie as chairman and Mr H. Scott as secretary. THE WAIMARINO ELECTORATE. OHAKUNE, Oct. 12. There are only two candidates for the Wai marine electorate —Air. F. Langstone, the sitting Labour member, and Air. R. W. Smith, Nationalist. Air. Smith represented Waimariuo for many years prior to being unseated two elections ago by Air. Lang, stone.
