The Hawera Alale Choir has engaged Air AV. Gemmell, a leading Dunedin baritone, and Airis 0. Grindrod, contralto, of Hawera, for its next concert on November 11.

Air A. C. Atkinson, of AA r ellington, who some years ago was a resident of Hawera, is staying here a few days, and is interested looking up old friends and noting the progress made in the town and district. The King has approved the conferring of; a barony on Sir George Lloyd on his appointment as High Commissioner for Egypt (says a London cable message).

The Rev. AV. AY. Avery accepted the unanimous invitation to remain ,a- third year in Eltham which was given at the quarterly meeting of the Eltham Methodist Circuit.

Okl residents of South Taranaki will regret to hear of the death at Patea of Mrs Kenworthy, widow of the late Mr. James Kenworthy, who. was for many years' in business in Patea as a booksei'er and stationer. Mrs Kenworthy. who was in her 78th year, had lived over 4.0 years in Patea. It is announced that Mr. Dunbar Sloane will contest the Wellington Central seat against Mr. Peter Fraser, the sitting Labour member. Mr. Sloane stands as a Reform candidate, says a Press Association message from Wellington. Mr. Fred Bramley, secretary of the council of the Trades Union Congress, died suddenly in his sleep (says a. message from Amsterdam). He represented the Trades Union Congress at. a conference of the International Federation of Trade Unions and the. Labour and Socialist International, which yesterday unanimously carried his proposal to conduct from November .15 to the middle of December special propaganda for the general ratification of the Washington eight-hour day convention. After just over 20 years’ connection with the" Stratford Post as managereditor, Mr A. E. Copping to-day relinquishes his position, and will be succeeded by Mr J. Petrie, who has filled various journalistic positions and is well known in press circles. Mr Copping has been personally identified with most movements in Stratford for the benefit of the town and district, and the Post, under his charge, has served the district well .and developed with the town. Mr Copping’s future movements are uncertain, but in the meantime he will enjoy a well-earned vacation. Mr Copping will carry with him the good wishes of his associates in the press world, and for ourselves we have to acknowledge many courtesies at the hands of Mr. Copping as neighbour.
