“HOLY DOORS.”

ST PETER’S CEREMONIES

LONDON, Oct. 1

The Pole, according to a message from Rome, has decided to hold special functions in connection with the closing of the “Holy Doors.” The Pope will close St. Peter’s door, celebrate a Pontifical Mass, and sing a “Te Deum.” He will also proclaim “the social kingdom of Jesus Christ,” directing that this festivity be included among the Church’s holidays. The 21st Ho.lv Year was opened last Christmas Eve' by a service in the portico of St Peter’s, in the course of which the Pope gave three taps with a silver hammer on the “Holy * or “Golden” Door, through which he then passed to bless the assembled multitude. The wall previously had been cut away bv the church workmen, making the “opening” ceremony purely formal. At the end- of Holy Year, the door will be sealed up again for another 25 years. The “Holy Doors in the other basilicas are opened and closed by specially-delegated cardinals.
