FIR® AT HOKITIKA. (by TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.I HOKITIKA., Oct. 9. A fire at four o’clock this morning completely destroyed the Westland Opera House, a large wooden building at the corner of Revell and Hampden streets. The fire had. a good hold when discovered and the whole structure was demolished together with its contents, except an engine and dynamo need for picture lighting. The property was owned by Mrs. Fitzsimmons, of Greymouth. A butcher’s shop adjoining was gutted. The total insu ranees amount to £915. A GENEROUS BEQUEST. WANGANUI, Oct. 9. By the will of the late James McGregor the sum of £12,000 isbequeathed to three local institutions, the orphanage, the hospital and the beautifying society each having onethird share, subject to the life interest of the widow.
SUPREME COURT AT CHRISTCHURCH. CHRISTCHURCH. Oct. 9. At the Supreme Court, John Wilmot Fink, for obtaining money by false pretences, was sentenced to a year’s hard labour. Richard 1 Edward Ellis, on thirty-eight charges of forgery and the issue of valueless cheques in various parts of New Zealand, received three years’ imprisonment. Manuel Valvoi, for escaping from Paparua prison, -was ordered a further year’s detention. He is now serving two rears for theft. Cyril Louis Walter Withell, for obtaining credit by fraud, was ordered reformative treatmesnt for two years.
