NEW BALL PROPOSAL. REJECTED BY ST. ANDREW’S. BY CA Ttr.E—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT (Received Oct. 1, 12.10 p.m.) LONDON, Sep. 30. By an overwhelming majority the Royal and Ancient Club of St. Andrew’s rejected a proposal of its rule committee that at the next British amateur and open championship the bigger lighter ball of the American type should be compulsory. The committee considered that the new ball, by curtailing the length of drive, would place a premium upon the quality of the stroke rather than upon distance. Mr Greenwood, writing in _ the. Daily Telegraph, expressed the opinion that a few plus men desire the change, but the struggling mass of long handicap men find golf exasperating enough already. Out of 150 present at St. Andrew’s only a dozen voted for the proposal.—A. and N.Z. Assn.
