BEGUM OF BHOPAL.
WOMAN RULER IN ENGLAND A LARGE ENTOURAGE. BY CABLE—PBESS ASSOCIATION—COPYBHIGT LONDON, Sep. 28. There were picturesque scenes at r Victoria Station on the arrival of the Begum of Bhopal (Princess), the only female ruler of an Indian State. Her Highness brought a large entourage of turbaned secretaries and attendants. The party, was welcomed by a very large assemblage of Indians. The visit of the Begum to London is connected with the important issue as to whether the succession to the throne of Bhopal should be decided by the law of primogeniture. In that case the rul3ns hip would go to the grandson of the Begum owing to the death of her eldest son. The alternative point is whether the customary rule of nomination is to be enforced. If so, she would probably nominate her youngest son. The rule of the Begum is most enlightened, particularly as regards education. Her loyalty to the British Empire in several crises has evoked frequent praise in Britain.
