HOLD-UP OF PRODUCE

EXTRA EDITION.

FARMERS’ UNION MANIFESTO.

FREE LABOUR SUGGESTED

(BY TELEGBAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION

WELLINGTON, Oct. 1

The New Zealand Farmers’ Union officials* met recently to consider the shipping noheaval which was threatening New Zealand. The following statement was to-day issued hy the officials present at the meeting: “It is of great importance to the farmers and the whole community that the matter should, he settled as promptly as possible in order to avoid very serious loss. At present £4,000,000 worth of produce was held up. It is clear to us that the disturbance is not due to any question of wages or conditions, but is a deliberate attempt to disorganise the shipping and trade of the Empire. While we are marking time our trade rivals, notably Argentine, are not being thus hampered. We therefore consider that no compromise is possible, and that there is no alternative but for the Government to take such action as should permit free labour of any standing to give a hand to put our goods on the market.”
