VISIT OF AMERICAN FLEET.

FROM OUR PARLIAMENTARY REPORTER WELLINGTON, Sept. 30

Supplementary .estimates were presented to the House to-day totalling £407,£44 on general revenue account and £108,050 for public works. The principal items were: Grant to the widow of the late W. F. Massey, £6000; on iacdount of Snemorial to the late Prime Minister, £SOOO. The visit of the American fleet to New Zealand cost £15,000 for rail and motor fares, illuminations, etc., and £SOOO for subsidies to local bodies’ entertainment funds. Provision is made for £925 for coal for the Government steamer Tutanekai for the visit of the Governor-General to the Pacific Islands. Additional subsidies to hospital boards amount to £30,000; railway passes and concessions to members of the Legislature',' their families and relations, £24,478; memorial to the late Hon Sir William. Herries (subsidy), £250; New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association, an additional £100; Royal Commission to inquire into agricultural banks, £SOOO. The Marine Department will provide £1250 for wireless equipment at Puysegur and Stephen’s Island lighthouses, while the Defence Department requires £26,000 for the purchase of an aerodrome site at Auckland. The Labour Department has a £SOO vote for technical tuition" of apprentices. The Electoral Department (provides £45,000 towards the cost of the general' election and £45,000 for printing the rolls. For higher education an additional £250 is voted: for the national research scholarships, and- £2500 for the maintenance olf schools -of forestry at Auckland and Christchurch' and £2350 for the expenses of New Zealand University courses. An additional £25,000 is appropriated for the restoration of road works, bridges, etc., damaged by flood, and £SOOO is provided for the relief of unemployed engaged on road works.

FROM O'UR PARLIAMENTARY REPORTER./ WELLINGTON, Sept. 30, Road votes in the supplementary estimates include the following Taranaki votes : Puke Road (Survey Creek Bridge), Clifton County, £175; Wiremu Road (Waiaua Stream bridge), _Egmont County, £265, £1 for £1; Ngawhini Road (£1 for £1), additional, Hawera County, £114; Ridge Road (on account), Pa ten County, £2OO. DISCUSSED BY HOUSE. MANY QUICKLY PASSED. WELLiLNiGTON, Sep. 30. The House this afternoon went into committee of supply to consider the Supplementary Estimates. . The first item taken was the Legislative Department, £26,349, which was passed alter discussion. Th enext votes were ’.Treasury Department £1212, Land arid Income Ta x Department £5523, Stamp Duties Department £6IBO, National Provident Fund £597, Post and Telegraph Department £14,284, public buildings, domains, etc., £30,150, irrigation’works £3OOO, Native Department £1021,. Department of External Affaire £1124. Cook Islands £5419, Department of Industries and - Commerce £9965, Justice Department £867, P'riisons Department £5157, Crown Law Office £222, Police Department £4073, Pensions Department £789, Mines Department £6408. These -were all passed with brief discussion. • _ , ' The Audit Department £SO, Public Service Commissioners’ Office £IOSO, Printing and Stationery Department £22,853 and Mental Hospitals Department £16,131, passed without discussion. _ . On rthe vote of £21,91'! for t>he Pu'blio Health Department, Mr X>, O: Sulli van and the Hon. D. Buddo commented favourably on the vote of £SOO for cancer research and expressed the hope that it would he increased. The Minister of Health said this vote was only a beginning and the amount would be raised next year; but they could hardly hope to do as much here as was being done in Britain, where they were spending millions sterling on this class of research. „ in The votes for Naval Defence £4Bo/, Defence Department £42,493 and Customs Department £7,727 passed. Labour members took strong exception to the vote for the Censorship Appeal Board, which they claimed was banning historical books which ought to be admitted into the Dominion. Mr P Fraser moved as an_amendment that the total vote be reduced by £IOO as an indication that the censorship should be lifted, and after a spirited discussion the amendment was, on a division, lost by 36 to 13, and the vote then passed.
