WOMEN PLAYERS. AMERICANS AND AUSTRALIANS MEET. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT NEW YORK, Sep. 26. At Philadelphia, Eleanor Goss defeated Daphne Akhurst (Australia), 6- —4, 3 —6, 6 —l- . In a series of six matches being placed here between prominent American players and visiting Australians, Elsa Boyd (Australia) defeated Mrs Marion Jessup, 6—4, 6—2; Mrs Harper (Australia) defeated Mrs Jessup, 9—7,_b— -1. Then Mrs Mallory placed the United States on even terms with the Australians by defeating Mrs Harper, 7 o, g 6 in one of the, closest women s matches' ever played here. A feature of the game was the sensational driving of both plavers, who preferred to remain in the back court, engaging m frequent long rallies. lhe iormei American champion managed to gam a victory by her superior accuracy. The Australians won the doubles, Misses Boyd and St. George defeating Misses Martha Bayard and Penelope Anderson, 3 —,6, 6—4, 6—5, and Miss St. George and Mrs A. R. Barry defeating Misses Aiine Townsend and Martha Bayard, 3—6, 6—4, 7—5. The Americans’ suDerior net play gave them the first set,'"but accurate stroking from the back court enabled' the Australians to win the match. . In another singles match Mrs Mallory defeated Miss Boyd. 6—l, &—4. America won the final doubles contest, Misses Goss and Jessup beating Miss Harper and Mrs A.khurst, 3— -o, q 4, 6 —3, giving America the series by four matches to three.
