NOTES ON THE RACING

(Bv Telegraph.—Special to The Star.) AUCKLAND, Sept. 26. Tiie Avondale spring meeting opened under very bad climatic conditions, which rendered the race track very heavy. Despite these conditions the public attended in large numbers, and although betting fell short of the corresponding day of last year, speculation -was fairly brisk. White Comet fell when entering the straight in the Cup, and Alaric fell over him. Their riders, Tinker and Watts, both got had falls

Nothing but Star Stranger was inquired for by bettors in the Maiden, and be was backed to two to one. He duly won after having a bad run in the early stages. When the barrier rose, Santa Fe, Turn, and Star Stranger began best, but Star Stranger soon lost his position and Santa Fe went on in front. Five furlongs from home Roy Reed brought Star Stranger through on the rails, and, finishing well, he won nicely from Kamehameha, which only beat the last finishing Kendal.

Llewellyn was a decided favourite for the Grey Lynn Hurdles, Rippling being a good second favourite. When the barrier rose, Te Tahi, Rippling, Tinokaha. and Ldewellyn comprised the leading division. After going half a mile, Llewellyn and Rippling led, Six furlongs from home Tinokaha took charge, but at the straight entrance Llewellyn was again in front, and although lie ran down his jumps, he won easily from Mahgoloire, which came with a great run to beat Tiiiukalia for second. The Welter was run in divisions. Lu the first Nucleus led Archibald, Billikins, and Day Guard over the early stages, and the quartette comprised the leading division into- the straight. Once in line for the. post King Smock came fast and won nicely from Alfort, which got left and then cut Archibald out of second money. In the second division of the Welter Sleepy Sol and Charlady began best-, but when the field settled down, King Cheops was leading from Gold Mint, Regent, and Charlady. At the home turn Waltzer ran to the. lead, and in the run to the post won easily from King Cheops, while Black Cruiser, with a late run,' finished third. Income was a good favourite for the Cup from Rapine, Tanadees, and Barometer. Star Ranger and Illumination were the first out, but when the field settled, down. White Comet, Gala Day, Pelham,’and Barometer were the leading Division. At the stand Gala Day led Spooney, Barometer, White Comet, Mount Marta, and Cureaform. Going up the hack, Mount Marta led Barometer, Cureaform, Te Monanui, and White Comet. Three furlongs from the winning post Cureaform rushed to the front, and at the straight entrance Barometer, Star ■ Ranger, and Te Monanui were her immediate- attendants. Over the . last furlong Star Ranger drew out, but Te Monanui came with a great run and Star Ranger had to be ridden out to win. Cureaform finished several lengths behind Te Monanui, while the unlucky Rapine was fourth and Spoony fifth. A nice lot of youngsters contested the Avondale Stakes. Of them Joy King was £250 better supported than Ngawati. From -a good send-off Phaola began very smartly from King Emerald, Flying Juliet, Claris, and Joy King. (Entering the straight Phaola (stiill led, but most of the runners ran wide, which let Joy King through, but Phaola ran on well, to beat Joy King, with Claris and Ngawati third and, fourth.

In a big pool in the Flying Handicap Hoariri was a £30!) better favourite than A atom ue. When the barrier rose Daylight liras actually first to begin, but King Lu soon took charge from Master Boon, York Abbey, and King’s- Speech. Entering the straight King Lu was just in front of Master Doon and York Abbey, but over the last furlong York Abbey went on to win easily from Master O’Rorke, which, just beat King Lu' in* the last stride. Exactly, Queen Arch, and Royal Blood were next to finish. Although there were only thirteen runners for the Henderson Handicap, the club ran the race in two divisions. In the first division Nocturne was first out from a fair start, and was followed by Joy Ride and Princess Ronnie. After going three furlongs Nocturne led from Zircon, Joy Ride, and Pompev. At the straight entrance Zircon passed Nocturne, but a hundred yards from the post Joy Ride came at Zircon and duly won by half a length from Zircon, with Nocturne and Namutere next.

In the second heat Quinette began quickly and led Anklet. Tactician, and Arch Amie over the early stages. Turning into the straight Quinette ran right off the course, and Arch Ami, who was also carried out, went on to win well from Tactician, with Wedding March and Desert Glow next. Despite the fact that the race track was in very had order by the time the Swanson Welter came on. Rip on Abbey was backed down to a very short price. Beginning well, he led Golden Sovereign, Adornment, and Romantic past the stand. Going down the back stretch. Ripen Abbey still led from Romantic, Lady Varoo, and Mosaic. Turning into the straight the

favourite was going easy in front, and went on to win easily from Rawini, Adi Vunivola, Lightwood, and Knghtliood, all of which were in close formation.
