BRIDGING THE CHANNEL.

USE OF TWO JETTIES. SWISS ENGINEER’S SCHEME. BY CABLE—PEE3S ASSOCIATION—COPYBIGHT. (Received Sep. 23, 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, Sep. 22. A Swiss engineer, Jules Jager, has ( proposed to European chambers of commerce to build two parallel jetties, costing £75,000,000, from Calais to Deal, each carrying a double rail track, also motor ways, to enable commerce to he interchanged at a lower capital cost than a Channel tunnel, to which the on Imperial Defence raised an objection. The jetties could he easily defended in war time, or, as a last resort, destroyed. Broad open spaces near the coast could be bridged by gigantic viaducts to admit the passage of the largest steamers using the Channel, while a smooth waterway between the jetties would enable canal barges to intercommunicate between London and Paris, thus contributing a considerable reduction to' Britain’s manufacturing costs. —Sydney Sun Cable.
