Charles Lends Powell', aged two years, died at the hospital from severe injuries to the mouth, caused by caustic soda, taken on Thursday. - BILLIARDS CHAMPIONSHIP. AUCKLAND, Sept. 14. CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 14. Andrew Giffney, aged 27, .was accidentally shot dead last evening at his home, near Brighton, while examining a Winchester repeating rifle in the company of Bernard Diedreich. The body of Margaret Neale, widow, aged 65, a resident of Mama, was fotuud floating on the Upper Whangared estuary yesterday. The deceased had been -mentally incapacitated for several years. 'She left the home of some relatives at Whangarei on Friday, ostensibly to visit other relatives at Kauri. This morning her clothes were found under thie bridge opposite the side of the stream, and a«s her body was clad in a nightgown, it is though the deceased bad the hallucination that fhe 'was going to bed. THEFT FROM VESSELS. AUCKLAND, Sept, 14. At the Police Court, Henry Newell, aged 40, Harry Betts, aged 27, and Amos George Taylor, aged 27, who pleaded guilty to stealing a quantity of serge stockings, etc., from various vessels. were sentenced, Newell to six months’ gao] and the two others each to two months. Thomas Langsford, for theft of, serges, the property of the Shaw Savil 1 © Co., was fined £lO, there being no conspiracy in this case. A DOCTOR IN TROUBLE. AUCKLAND, Sept. 14. A doctor, whose name was ordered to be suppressed, was charged at tho Police Court and pleaded guilty to being drunk while in charge of a motorcar. Mr Poynton, S.3VL, imposed a sentence of three days’ imprisonment. Defendant’s counsel pleaded for a fine, as in the case last week of another professional man. Mr Poynton : “Yes, he was fined £2, hut lie damaged his car to the extent of £35. Eventually he considered the matter, and imposed a fine of £25 in the present case.
