BOXING.

PLEA FOR AMATEUR SPORT. At the annual dinner of the NorthEast London, Division of the English Amateur Boxing Association, one of the speakers struck the right note when he said that the ideal amateur sport’ was not pot-hunting and the winning of championships, gratifying as it might be to have something tangible to show for one’s physical efforts. It ‘ was a far better thing that young fellows should he drawn to the sport in increasing numbers, and that a good average standard of skill should he attained by them rather than that just a few boxers should stand out above the rest. These views coincide with those held by the persons who aim to reconstruct amateur boxing in New Zealand, and will appeal to all who are genuinely interested in amateur sport.
