fr LADIES’ CHAMPION SHIP. AVON BY SOUTHLAND. (l!Y TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION.) GISBORNE, Sep. 4.
The final of the New Zealand ladies’ hockey tournament was played to-day in good weather and before an attendance of 1501). Southland, the present champions, retained the honour, heading Ruahine by three goals to two. The game was fast from start to finish, brilliant and scientific play being witnessed. The southerners’ victory was due to their'hard hitting and combination. The southern forwards put up a great- exhibition, while their backs played a great game. The Ruahine forwards were good individually, but they lacked the finished team work of their opponents, the full-backs being inclined to speculate. The game was fought desperately from start to finish, the score at half-time being one all. For Southland goals were scored by Alisses Horner. Melvin and Bell, and for Ruahine bv Airs Hoppi and Aliss V. Redfern.
GISBORNE, Sept. 3.
