MANAIA CIVIC AFFAIRS.
MEETING OF THE BOARD. The monthly meeting of the Manaia Town Board was held last evening. There were present: Commissioners L. •1 Nielson (chairman). V. H. Hobday, H Mead. J. Hickey, S. H. Greaves, N C. Junes, and Mr W. J. Bail ley .’e'erk). Cr. J. A. G. Cosgrove was granted leave of absence. WORK OF THE MONTH. The foreman (Mr .J. Lett) reported as follows-.—Street lights: Nine burntbut bulbs have been replaced. Watei . Two tin. services have been installed; new bal'. rubber in hydrant plug lias been put in; also repairs effected at Ladies’ Rest Room. Footpaths: lour and a half chains of path have been formed and metalled in Patukukupa Street. The path has been cleaned also a short piece formed and-metalled n Kan uni Street. 1 have started carting filing for path by school in Ear aka Street, and hone to have same finished in the course of a few Pcac's • The pot-holes in Kapuni btieet have been filled up with footpath .-.leaning. Ordinary patching work has been done in a number of streets. General: On clean-up day 8b residents availed themse ves of the coLection oi 'refuse, and this work was carried out - motor lorry in one day at a normal My attention was called to the bad'state of the pound gate anil one strainer post, and I recommend that a new gate and strainer be put tlieie. The report was adopted, the replacement of the town pound gate being authorised. Appreciation was expresseo •it tho manner in which the clean-up day had been conducted. MANAIA RAILWAY. A letter dated Ist September received from Mr O. Havvken, M-P-> stated in reply to the board s ett-.r that he had not seen the petition ask...r for the completion cr the Manaia branch railway. With reference to the Prime Minister’s statement, Cr. Hobdav intimated hat the rialway tariff would have to ije put on a competitive basis with the ost of road transport before any hopes cou,cl be entertained of the suggested contract being agreed to. He explained that when the matter had been discussed previously with the Minister, it hud been pointed out that the railway tariff -would mean an extra cost of 7s 2d per ton on produce as compared with road transport, ancl from a business point of view it was, of course, unreasonable to expect the requested mi-cement. WATER SUPPLY.
