SHUNTERS’ RISKS.
CONDITIONS AT PALMERSTON,
INQUIRY CONTINUED
(BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION.) PALMERSTON N., Sept. 3. The Railway Shunting Inquiry Board resumed its hearing to-day of evidence as to conditions at the local railway yard. Mr La Voltz, traffic inspector, of Wellington, 'said that until the death of Carmichael he had received no complaints of local conditions. The present traubje he deemed to be an organised agitation. For instance, he had inquired into the conditions of porters at Otaki, and found them to be satisfactory. The men there stated the movement on their behalf was token an by the A.S.R.S. at Palmerston North, against the wishes of the men at Otaki. Both recent shunting fatalities at Palmerston North were deemed to be due, not to the conditions, hut to the .lack of thought on the part of the deceased. Cross-examined by Mr Mack, witness admitted that the yard at Palmerston North could be made safer with improved appiontments, jnore roads, better drainage and other improvements, but he considered the lighting was very good. He admitted that it was not now his opinion that this was an organised agitation.
