A WOMAN’S DEATH. (BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 31. Elizabeth- Gordon.; Cruden, a single woman aged 50, committed suicide by using a gas tube. NEPIA INJURED. GISBORNE, Aug. 31. While cranking a. car, Nepia, the All Black footballer,, sustained painful injuries to his face, which was gashed considerably by the cranking handle in consequence of the engine back-firing. WOMAN DIES OF INJURIES. AUCKLAND, Aug. 31. Mrs. Bridget Annie Martin, aged 33, has died at the hospital from injprie.-:. received. She was struck by a tramcar on Friday evening while running across Queen Street, in company with her huislhand. PRISONERS SENTENCED. CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 31-. At the -Supreme Court the undermentioned prisoners were sentenced:--George Edward. Wilkins and John Evans for theft; three years’ probation; Alfred Frederick Gwatkin, for carnal knowledge, five .years on one charge and two years on the second, sentences to be cumulative. The judge regretted that lie could not order-a flogging. William John Cameron, for theft,- . two years’ reformative treatment; Arthur Godf rej Halstead, for ..carnal .i knowledge, ‘five years’ hard;labour and. flogging. The orisoner collapsed-, on .hearing : the sentence. ~ .Horace .Hartman, for.., theft, •hree years’ reformative treatment. VALUMLFis CHEQUES ISSUED. .Aug. ■ 31, . George, Edward Hayes, with several aliases, ,-.sa?* : sentenced ;.-.te .eighteen mpnths’ hard labour on charges of obtaining mopey, and goods by means oi valueless cheques. The police stated that the accused opened bank account*at. Lower. Hurt , with £l6. ..Later he issued cheques to, the value,,of oye-i £IOO,. all o-f which, were dishonoured. The offences, concerned jn ..the present charges occurred at Qtakiuand’ Levin.
