HUNT CLUB RACES. A SUCCESSFUL MEETING. CRAIGOWEN WINS CUP. RAF A THE OPEN SPRINT. Fine weather and prospects of a good day’s sport attracted a large crowd to the North Taranaki Hunt Club’s totalisator meeting, held at the Taranaki Jockey Club’s course, New Plymouth, on Saturday. There, was a (rood class of horse engaged m the principal events, and interesting racing was reflected In spirited ’betting. The meeting was well conducted, much credit being due to the secretary (Mr E: L. Humphries). Although he had some difficult fields to deal with, the 'starter (Air C. O’Connor) got the horses away well, and the judge (An J. Cameron) gave his decisions promptly and accurately. Speculation was brisk, the totalisator handling £17,557, as . compared with £16,835 last year, an increase ot The result of the principal event, the Hunt Club Cup, came as a surprise to most, the Waverley horse, Eraigoiveii, l>eing the first past the post ill a field of nine, and returning its investors with a dividend amounting to close .on a score. In the open sprint Rafa won in convincing style alter getting a flying start out from the barrier. . . There were a few mishaps m tne steeplechase event, Lochullen losing his rider (E. Conestake). who was removed to hospital* suffering from severe bruises.* In the same race Te loa, the winner of the cup during the last two years, fell and broke his neck, liis udei (R Thompson) escaping injury. There were several inquiries during the day. After the Lepperton Hunters’ Hurdles, .Stanway. the rider of Roaming, was suspended for the rest of the meeting for interference with Hindi. An inquiry was held into the running of All Wind, hut the stewards decided that, taking into consideration the ungenerous nature of All Wind, Ihey would give the rider the benefit of the doubt. After the Stratford Handicap the stewards decided that the handling of Rational was unsatisfactory, and. while deciding to take no further action, told the trainer and Jockey that thev were decidedly dissatisfied with the" running of the horse. Throughout the day an enjoyable programme of music was . rendered by the First Battalion Taranaki Regimental Band under Lieut. F. W. G. McLeod. Results:
