RAILWAY STRIKE
NO TRAINS RUNNING
INDUSTRIES AFFECTED
MEN RENDERED IDLE.
BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION —COPYRIGHT. BRISBANE, August 30. Although the .railway strike is no nearer a settlement, the general situation is calmer. The Premier (Mr W. Gi'iies) announced that a compulsory conference had been called for MonOwing to the strike cutting off the company’s oil supply, the Mount Morgan mine has been closed. The feeling in union and political circles is that if any settlement of the railway strike is reached .it will be at Monday’s caucus. It is probable the unions will ignore the proposed compulsory conference convened by the Government for Monday. At Mount Morgan 1600 men are idle, and if the strike lasts another week practictlly the whole of the sugar industry will be suspended, affecting at least 20,000 men. Should the strike continue 35,000 members of the Australian Workers’ Union will be rendered idle. So far practically all the meat works in the State are closed. The expresses from Sydney over the week-end are cancelled.
