EMPIRE’S PROSPERITY.

RESEARCH AS LEVER. SIR F. HEATH’S MISSION. LONDON, Aug. 11. The Secretary of the Scientific Im dustrial Research Department (Sir Frank Heath), who is sailing by the Nester on August 29 for Australa, ot the Commonwealth’s invitation, later proceeding to New Zealand, said in an interview to-day: “I am anxious that British and Australian and New Zealand research should be eo-odrinated, because many mutual problems might be solved by cooperative effort, especially the transport of foodstuff*. “My department was founded in 1917 with a £11,000,000 grant from the Imperial Government to co-ordinate all branches of commercial and scientific research. Twenty-four industries have formed scientific committees, of which 21 are actively working out their own trade problems. “Co-ordinated research throughout the Empire will be a powerful lever in restoring the Empire’s prosperity. It takes time for results to mature into commercial values. Therefore, research must be continuous and systematic.”
