“OVER-GOVERNED.”
HARD CRITICS ON OUR WAYS. LONDON, June 30. “The New Zealander is controlled from the cradle to the grave.” This is a statement made by a correspondent to the Kent Messenger. The writer gives what he. calls “a few notes”,for the benefit of those thinking of going out to the Dominion. On the question of Indian migration he says: ' “The apathy of the white population towards them is remarkable, as New Zealand is now the only colony which permits their entry, and in this, menace Jo the future, welfare ot the country is likely to increase very soon, and cause labour and other troubles, as they ' work for low wages and are said to live on the smell of an oiled rag. Fiirthermore, they are no benefit to the country in any way, and tlie sooner all Asiatics are barred out the better for the Dominion. New-Zea-land House informed me that Asiatics were absolutely shut out," yet the ship in which I came over from Sydney had quite a lot of Chinese and Indians for New Zealand on board. “The country is over-governed with inspectors of every conceivable thing, and one cannot truthfully say that it_ is as free as the Old Country. As an instance, I saw recently in the paper that an employer was convicted and fined for employing a man who was not a member of any trade union. ‘ *lf prohibition comes, as 'is very probable after the next referendum this year, it will need an additional army of officials and probably a fleet to enforce it, seeing that New Zealand has between 4009 and 5000 miles of coastline.'”
