FIGHT FOR MARKETS.
BRITISH CONSUMER’S DUTY. CASE FOR DOMINIONS. LONDON, Aug. 11. Tailing as liis text, Mi - . L. O. Amery’s statement, ‘‘Public opinion overseas h,as not njraisped tlie conception that Empire settlement is essential to tlie building up o.f their illation*! life,'’ Mr. AY. H. Kelly, ex-M.H.R., of Sydney, in a letter which is prominently displayed in the Times, puts, tlie case on. behalf of tlie Dominions. He uecallsi Mr. Bnuee’s dictum ikt tlie last Imperial Oonfereuce that markets and isetitleiiient constituted ,a single problem, and could not bo divorced. Mr. Kelly says: ‘ ‘The • British public does not yet realise that a fresh war. is being waged for markets land the very existence of British industry. The Mother iCbuntry its losing heavily, and her casualties are walking tlie' streets worldess.' ’
If Britons emigrate in sufficient numbers to relieve unemployment, lie adds, there must be a corresponding readiness on the part of British consumers to take the products of their labour. There will be a limit to the expansion of Australia’® primary industries until British coniitnerciall men anil -consumers learn to think of' the ultimate aid, vantage and not of immediate profit.
