BOAT CAPSIZES.
FIVE PEOPLE DROWNED. TRAGEDY AT FOXTON. (liV TELEGRAPH' —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) PALMERSTON N., Aug. 23. Following upon the drowning tragedy in the Orou'a River last Sunday, the bodies of the three. victims of which have still not been recovered, Atanawatu has been visited with another horrifying week-end fatality. Tlhomais 'Sitlatf, a farmer, of hoxton, hiis two sons, Walter (aged 17) and Alfred (aged 15) and Iris two daughters. Driieio (aged -19) and; Margaret (aged 14) were drowned at the Manawatu Heads, at Fox,ton on. Saturday. The father had built a boat for himself, and the party went down the river from Foxton to the month, evidently with the idea of fishing over tho bar. . Maori women gathering pipis saw tho frail craft go over the bar, and at the third wave it capsized. The women heard cries for help, and immediately rushed hade to* the pilot s house, which wais ai mile distant. The pilot’s launch made a nearch and found nothing whatever. The police were notified, but for some time nobody kivw who had gone over the bar. * «|.onie of the bodies were washed ashore this morning. iMirs. Staff is left with two small children.
