Holland (Leader of the Labour Party) gave notice of his intention to introduce the Workmen's Compensation Act Amendment Bill No. 2. The House then went into committee on several Bills. The first taken was the Massey Burial Ground Bill, which was passed without amendment. The Nurses and Midwives Registrufcion Bill was next taken, discussion being resumed! at clause 14, which was amended- to read, that the control of any Stat© maternity home may, with the consent of any hospital board, be at any time transferred, to such board. As an aemndment to clause 14, Air. J. McCombs (Lyttelton) moved’that the cost of maintaining maternity iiomes be borne by the State. The acting-chairman of committees (Air. E. E. Hockley) ruled the amendment out of order, on the ground that it was increasing expenditure. Air. AlcCombs contended that his proposal did not increase expenditure, out simply kept it where it was now and prevented the Government shifting it on to local bodies. He asked that the ruling of the Speaker be taken as to the validity of his amendment. This course was agreed to, and after hearing argument the Speaker ruled that the amendment did not increase expenditure, and was therelore in order. A division was taken on Air. AleCombs’ amendment, when it was deleated by SO votes to 25. The reaminder of the clauses were passed without amendment. A new clause was added by the Minister alfeeting the registration of nurses, and the Bill was then reported with amendments.

A BRIEF SITTING. WELLINGTON, Aug. 18. The Legislative Council met at 2.30 p.m. to-day. Leave of absence was granted to the Hon. E. W. Alison for a week, and to the Hon. 0. H. Izard for a fortnight, on account of illness. Sir Francis Bell gave notice of his intention to introduce the Samoa Shipping Bill, and the Hon. J. Alacgregor to introduce the Juries Amend, ment Bill. . A motion by the Hon. G. M. I hornson that the Council was of opinion that the Dominion Aluseum should be placed under the control of a hoard of trustees as the only means of securing that public interest in its extension and success as -would lead to the erection of a, new, commodious and fireproof structure, was defeated' <>n the voices.

The Council adjourned at 3.35 p.m until 2.30 p.m. to-morrow.
