FOR, Ol ll 101! INDUSTRIES. i’ COAL SUBSIDY PRECEDENT. \ 3Y carls—brbß» association -copybight. LONDON, Aug. IS. The Daily Herald reprints and editorially comments on a letter by' Sir Samuel Ins tone to the Western Mail, advocating the nationalisation of the railways. Sir Samuel 1 rust one says: “Following the coal subsidy, it will not be long before labour in other industries takes up a similar position and seeks the support of the miners’ and other unions. It is, therefore, essential that an effort should be made to .settle the whole industrial problem at one stroke. “This is possible at one sweep, which will bring a trade boom ,and reduce the cost of living, namely, by the nationalisation of the railways. They should then carry coal, ra-w materials and foodstuffs' at nominal charges. This will enable us to recapture the coal markets, keep every' ship now tied up employed, make shipbuilders and steelmakers work full time, and make farming profitable. The railways need a subsidy, but it will be better to subsidise one than a series of industries, especially as the nationalisation of the railways' will abolish unemployment doles and reduce the income tax.’’ The writer added that lie was always opposed to nationalisation, but a desperate remedy was needed for the unprecedented situation. Cheap transport would do for industry what cheap coal *.li<l in, the part generation.
