Miss Lillian Harrison commenced to swim the channel from Cape Gris Nez but abandoned the attempt after eight miles. She fainted in the water and commenced to sink in a choppy sea. Helmi, the Egyptian aspirant for channel honours, jumped overboard from an accompanying tug, but failed to. hold Miss Harrison owing to the grease with which she was plentifully besmeared. Others swam with ropes and hauled her aboard.—Sydney Sun Cable. MISS EDERLE HAVING A TRY. (Received Aug. 12, 1.50 p.m.) LONDON, Aug. 11. Miss Ederle, aged 18, left Boulogne, to-day on her first attempt to swim the Channel. —A. and N.Z. Assn.
