MANAIA LABOURER’S FAILURE

ESTATE OF LEO. REARDON. ILLNESS THE CAUSE. A meeting of creditors was called yesterday afternoon in the estate of Leo. Reardon, labourer, of Manaia. There was only one creditor present, Miss I. Stodclart, and the meeting lapsed for want of a quorum. Mr P. O’Dea was present on behalf .of bankrupt. The Deputy Official Assignee (Mr R.' S. Sage) examined bankrupt. Bankrupt’s estate showed a deficiency of £l5B 2s 4cl, there being no assets. The unsecured creditors were as follows : Estate of McVicar £73, Mies Stoddart £2O, H. Sutton (Manaia) £lO, G. Cook £5, A. Bailey £4 12s, Kauppkonui Dairy Co. £7 14s 4d, Smith and Caugliey (Auckland) £lO Is, C. S. Chong £23, A. Franklin 16s, Hawera County Electric Light Co. £1 9s, T. W. Arinitage £2. Bankrupt in his written statement said: In June. 1923, I got a bad attack of pneumonia, as a result of which I was out of work and unable to work for seven months. The consequence of this was that debts accumulated which I have been unable to catch up on since. I have been working as- a general labourer, averaging about 12s a day during fine weather. It has been impossible to catch up on my debts, and summonses and judgment summonses have been issued against me, and I am forced to file. Bankrupt stated that the large debt owing to the McVicar estate was caused by arrears of rent on a small property which he leased from them. His illness had cost him a considerable amount, and then inconstant work had brought him in a very small amount of wages, and it was only since he went to Wanganui that he had been able to secure fairly constant work. The Deputy Official Assignee (Mr R., S. Sage) said that bankrupt had 1 done tile best, he could under the circumstances. and it was very unfortunate that, due to creditors pressing, a young man had been forced to file to avoid a small amount of debt.
