Mr P. W. Allen, a former resident of Kaponga, is revisiting that town. Mrs Allen accompanies him.
A Waimate telegram states that George Barclay has been selected as the official Liberal candidate for the Waitaki seat.
In acknowledging the invitation of the Egmont A. and P. Association to open this year’s summer show, the Prime Minister (Hon. J. G. Coates) has written saying that it is, as yet, rather early to say definitely whether he will be able to be in Hawera at show time. Mr Coates, however, expresses his sincere appreciation of the invitation, and promises to keep it in mind for consideration a little later on, when he will advise the association further.
The Hawera Amateur Athletic Cub tendered a farewell social evening to Mr A. E. Gorton in the Savoy Tea Rooms last night. A pleasant evening was spent with an excel’ent musical programme and dancing. During supper Mr R. Jones took the opportunity of presenting the guest until a silver inkstand. He spoke of Mr Gorton’s enthusiastic work as a member of the club, and hoped that lie would join up in Wellington and give the same service there.’ Messrs C. Whittington and L. I. Marter endorsed the chairman’s remarks, and expressed their regret at losing such a sport and a gentleman. Mr Gorton, in rep’y said that liis work on. behalf of the club had always given him the greatest of pleasure. He thought that amateur athletic clubs should be to a verv considerable extent, for it was from them that sprang the great men of the nation. He promised to always keen the Hawera Club -in his mind, and to do a’l possible to further its interests when m Wellington.
