ADULTERATED MILK.
VENDOR FINED £lO. John F. Tidily, a milk vendor, of Hawera, was fined £lO at the Magistrate’s Court this morning by Mr J. S. Barton, S.M., on a charge, of selling adulterated milk. Sergeant Henry outlined the ease, which was, briefly, that a sample of the piilk sold by defendant was taken and forwarded to Wellington. The analyst ’s report showed that, although the fat percentage content of the milk was above that required by the Act, the milk showed an addition of 9 per cent water. The defendant stated that during the winter he had to buy all his milk. He had bought the milk in good faith. He was prepared to state that nothing had been added to the milk during the time it was in liis possession, and that hel did not put the water in. The Magistrate reminded defendant that there was a remedy which the Act had provided to protect the vendor in such circumstances. The remedy was to take a written warrant from the person from whom the vendor purchased. Defendant stated lie did not know of the clause in the Act.
The Magistrate said that the public had to be protected. Nine per cent, was nearly one-tentli, and consequently the public were paying for one part in ten of water at the same price as milk. Defendant was fined £lO and ordered to pay costs, 17s 9d.
