OTAKEHO.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) FARMERS’ UNION. A meeting; of the local branch ol the N.Z. Farmers’ Union wars held in the hall on Saturday, August- 1, Air. E. 11.I 1 . Burke presiding over a. fair attendance of in-embers. Letters of thanks were received from Mr. J. Campbell and family and Airs. John. Young anti family expressing their -appreciation of the condolence .passed to them in their recent bereavements. The balance-sheet of the annual dance anti .social evening, which, although it -showed a flight loss, was considered very satisfactory on account of the rough weather at- the time ol the function.
The chairman stated that Mr. G. Ford, Government- stock i inspector, with -his usual generosity and willingness had consented to -give an address ■in cattle ailments to the membeiH. As Mr. I'oid was well known to all n:esint there would he no occasion to introduce him, but ho had mucli pleasure in -asking Mr. Ford to address the meeting. Mr. Ford said that he did not propose to give aiu address, but would touch oil the most- common ailments in dairy cattle -and would then be pleased to hear a, discu>ssion and answer any questions lie was able. During the course of his remarks the speaker dealt with abortion, manimitis, paralysis, milk fever, ted water, food poisoning, retention! of afterbirth, and vagi luitis. The .speaker very ably explained the various ailments, their probable cauises, and gave many simple and home-made mixtures that could be used. Alt the conclusion, of his remarks those present'entered into a discussion Which should prove profitable to many. The chairman, in moving a beauty vote of thanks to Air. Fo-rd, -said that the farmers of Otakeho were always pleased to have him at a meeting, nr? they were sure of getting some good and useful information to take home with them. He hoped Mr. Ford would find k- convenient to address a-nothei meeting in the near future. Air. Ford, in reply, thanked the members! for the vo-te and the chairman for Ids remarks. He stated that it was always a, pleasure to him to attend any meeting of farmers- and give what -a-sicita-nce he could, but he was in')re than pleased to be present : at an Otakeiho meeting, where those present- -always entered into a good di«-'u’l-isi -I which, was an education to all. He -also expressed his willingness to et.Tp-n in the near future if possible. In conclusion he advised those -present that if they found it necessary to calf in a- veterinary sungoon not- to leave it too late, but. to get him before the beast was too weak and give the expert a chance -against fair edits.
