AN EXPLANATION.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —Permit me to say for the benefit. of your* correspondent “Irish Nationalist” that my reference to Mr Corrigan’s attendance* at a social of his compatriots was not intended in any way as a criticism of Mr Corrigan’s action. By all means let Mr Corrigan attend what social he, pleases. I agree that a member should be free, especially in election year, to attend functions in connection with any or all denominations, be they Anglican, Roman Catholic, Presbyterian, Methodist, Salvationist, Muggletoiiian, Seventh Day Adventist or Christadelphian. What I did suggest was that, in view of the recent political changes, Mr Corrigan had a prior duty to the electors as a whole. If Mr Masters can take liis* constituents into liis confidence, why cannot Mr Corrigan? Can all the “Irish Nationalists” in Hawora, even with the “wise guidance” so mysteriously referred to by our friend, put up an argument to justify Mr Corrigan’s silence? There, are not church socials every night, or even every week-end. If it could not have been managed on Monday of last week, why could we not have, been favoured on the Tuesday following the social? Of course, it would have been too much to have expected an address this past week-end when Mr Corrigan had the annual meeting of the Hawera Dairy Company to attend to, but- why not next week-end? Could it not be arranged that the National Party’s campaign in the Patca electorate iihould be opened, say, on Monday or Tuesday next? When the formation of the* now National Party was first announced sonic three weeks ago, Mr Tom Wilford stated that a campaign would he opened throughout the country “next week,” hut so far this new political sky-rocket of a National Party has been “all fizz and no burst.” Though it may appear presumptuous for a political nonentity like myself to press this* matter, I do earnestly appeal to Mr Corrigan to make a pronouncement when next in Hawera. Email their good intentions he must see that, some of his supporters like “Irish Nationalist” are likely to do his cause more harm than good by their apologetics. An address from Mr Corrigan would do much to clear the- air.—l am, “BONEHEAD.” Hawera.
